...And I quit.
What happened? Well, I got to about 15,000 words and I realized that I had no story. I had the beginning and end figured out in my head but no middle. There was no conflict or mystery for my main character, so she was mostly just sitting around, thinking. I didn't want another 35,000 words of that.
I tried to sit down and plot it out and even considered starting over but I just don't know how to fix it at this point. I think I need to leave it for a while and come back when I am ready to "kill some of my darlings" so that the story will work.
I am very disappointed to have failed NaNo for the first time, though I am starting to think that maybe the "get it all down and fix it later" (aka "vomiting it out on the page") style of writing is not for me. I would like to try plotting very thoroughly beforehand and then writing slowly and deliberately. I've done it once with a short story and I think it is the best thing I have written so far.
